Brother Larry Schatz
2025 Service Trip

What impact did you feel you had on the people and community you served during your Centre of Love Foundation service trip?

Each day we encountered powerful examples of people in need of extra TLC receiving exactly that, and so much more. Wherever we went, we met good people with a huge heart for serving others. I’m not sure what impact we had besides simply being there and showing up and getting involved, but I think that in itself is a witness.

What did you learned about yourself during your trip?
It confirmed in me my realization that I can pretty quickly adapt to new situations and be present fully to new encounters and adventures, and that I love meeting new people and enjoying new cultural experiences.

What did you take away from the service trip experience?
The community we formed that week as our diverse group of Americans came together to serve and be served was both a result of our shared experiences as well as a valuable way to check in with each other and to simply enjoy being together as we shared some pretty challenging adventures and encounters. It certainly confirmed my vocation as a De La Salle Christian Brother, dedicated to community and faith.

2025 Service Trip

Tell us about a few moments that stood out to you during your time in Kenya working with The Centre of Love Foundation.

One particular moment that stood out was when a gentleman at Kariobangi Cheshire Home (a senior home where we spent some time) saucily nabbed my ball cap and put it on, smiling all the while. Neither of spoke a lick of each other’s language but our joking and ribbing crossed all linguistic boundaries. It wasn’t until a few minutes into our interaction that I realized he was legless – which nonetheless hadn’t impeded his jesting.

I also noticed something important as I looks back on my photos from Saint Paul’s Children’s Home . Look at the juxtaposition of kids at play with a picture of an elderly caregiver. The camera is often drawn to the children, and yet it’s the seemingly tireless, dedicated, caregivers that enable the fulfillment of each nonprofit’s mission.

Before the trip, I wondered what use an unskilled business person could actually bring physically to the mission. However, at every location, children, caregivers, elders, were happy just to hold our hands and interact. One didn’t need special skills to be of use. I learned that it was OK to just be present.

I relearned that even in one’s 60s, there is still plenty one hasn’t experienced.

I took away from the trip that we are just small cogs in a massive worldly system yet even so, we can make a difference. If one has the capability, then I believe one needs to make a difference. This service, infused vigor into a quest of trying to advocate for, and make a positive difference for, others in this world.
