About Anthony Richard Hulula

Founding Ngao was personal for me. My parents were peasant farmers who both lost their parents at
young ages. They were only able to acquire basic educations class 7 and Form 2 respectively. Money was a constant struggle, especially for education. My parents valued education but with 10 children and not enough food, hard choices had to be made. I was able to go to high school but as a day scholar student.
While in high school, I worked as a cobbler to help raise money for the family and my education. Because
of my family background, money was always a concern but this was especially true during my high school
years. This is when I started to understand just how valuable education is.

At school, I joined Young Christian Students (YCS). After serving as the YCS President at the school, I became the assistant secretary at the zonal level. This role exposed me to the outside world. Standing in front of other students from different schools built my self-confidence and self-esteem. The YCS events gave me a positive outlook on life. I started getting the picture of life, education, and living within my own means. I started understanding my parents, their predicaments, and their selflessness towards us.  After high school, I began working with the Xaverian brothers with children who were homeless. For the brothers, I coordinated a program for homeless children while studying to become a teacher. I traveled to Congo, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and beyond. All the while I knew that community development, especially through education, was what I was learning to do and what I wanted to focus on more. Then I moved to Kangemi, where I continued to work with homeless children and those in need, but I also began having conversations in the community about what the community needed. With approximately 9 years directly involved in coordinating community programs, I realized I wanted to start my own organization. This is where the Ngao Foundation really began. Who I am has shaped Ngao, but Ngao has also shaped who I am. Through recruiting like-minded, devoted people, Ngao has grown to be the organization that it is today. I and the team are devoted to the Foundation’s success and we will continue to work tirelessly with the communities around us to improve lives through community outreach, education, and empowerment building.
